Tax & Customs Law

Responding to tax and customs proceedings

Shafique Law Associates is led by Shafique Ahmed. We act for individuals, businesses and companies.

Income tax and federal sales tax are administered by the Federal Board of Revenue under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 and the Sales Tax Act, 1990. Sales tax on services in Punjab is collected by the Punjab Revenue Authority. Customs cases fall under the Customs Act, 1969. Each has its own notices, deadlines and appeal route, and we explain which one applies to you.

Questions

Tax and customs questions

Short answers to questions clients ask us. Every case turns on its own facts, so speak to us before acting on any of them.

I have received a notice from the FBR. What should I do?

Check the deadline and the section under which the notice was issued, then collect the records it asks for. Do not ignore it: an unanswered notice can lead to an assessment based only on the information the department already holds. Have your reply reviewed before you file it.

Where do I appeal an income tax order?

Most orders of an Inland Revenue officer can be appealed to the Commissioner Inland Revenue (Appeals), and from there to the Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue. Appeals must be filed within the time limits set by law, so act as soon as you receive the order.

What is a customs show-cause notice?

It is a notice from customs that sets out an alleged violation, such as misdeclaration of value or classification, and asks why action should not be taken. Your written reply and evidence are considered before an order is passed, so the reply matters.

Do you act for individuals as well as companies?

Yes. We advise individuals, sole proprietors, firms and companies on tax notices, assessments, appeals and customs matters.

Do you handle tax matters outside Lahore?

Yes. We are based in Lahore and also act in tax and customs matters in other cities in Pakistan. Call us with the details and we will tell you how we can help.
