Business & Commercial Law

Legal advice that fits how your business runs

Shafique Law Associates is led by Shafique Ahmed. We work with company directors, partnerships, sole proprietors and people starting a business.

Much of our business work happens before there is any dispute: reviewing a contract before it is signed, setting out terms between partners, or sending a legal notice before a payment problem grows. When court action is needed, we act in civil and commercial proceedings.

Questions

Business law questions

Short answers to questions clients ask us. Every case turns on its own facts, so speak to us before acting on any of them.

A customer has not paid. What should I do first?

Collect the invoices, delivery records and correspondence, then send a formal legal notice demanding payment by a set date. Many payment disputes settle at this stage. If not, a recovery suit can be filed, and a summary suit may be available where the debt rests on a cheque.

What happens if a cheque bounces?

The payee can file a civil suit to recover the amount and may also lodge a criminal case under section 489-F of the Pakistan Penal Code, which applies where a cheque is issued dishonestly to repay a loan or meet an obligation. The right approach depends on the facts.

Can you review a contract before I sign it?

Yes. We read the whole agreement, point out the clauses that carry risk for you, and suggest changes you can send to the other side before signing.

Do you advise on matters involving the SECP?

Yes. We advise companies, directors and shareholders on matters under the Companies Act, 2017, including issues that involve the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

Do you act for businesses outside Lahore?

Yes. We are based in Lahore and also act for businesses in other cities in Pakistan. Call us with the details and we will tell you how we can help.
